If you have searched for a LookAway alternative, you probably want one of two things: the same smart pausing for less money across more Macs, or a simpler app that does the core job without the dashboard. EyeRest Flow is built for both of those people. If instead you want iPhone sync, website usage statistics or automations, LookAway is the better buy, and we will say so below.

In one minute

The difference in a sentence each

LookAway is the more complete product: more pause triggers, usage analytics, phone sync, automations, App Store and Setapp availability. It is priced per device, with updates included for a year on the $19 and $29 tiers and for life at $99.

EyeRest Flow is the simpler, cheaper product for people with more than one Mac: $19 once covers 3 Macs with every update included, it has guided breaks and blink and posture nudges, and it is deliberately quiet. It does not sync to a phone or track usage.

Smart pausing

This is the reason to pay for either app rather than use a free timer, and both do it well. LookAway’s Smart Pause has the longer list: meetings and calls, screen recording, video, deep-focus apps, full-screen games, calendar events, typing, dragging and idle time, plus Focus Filters so a Focus mode can switch it off. EyeRest Flow watches for the microphone being in use, screen recording, full-screen video and presentations, typing, and idle or locked screens.

In day-to-day use the overlap covers almost everything: nobody is interrupted mid-call, mid-recording or mid-sentence in either app. Where LookAway pulls ahead is the edges. If you game full-screen without audio chat, use Focus modes to carve up your day, or want calendar events to pause breaks automatically, LookAway handles those and EyeRest Flow does not. If you only need the big triggers, the two are equivalent here.

The break itself

LookAway’s breaks are the most polished looking in the category, with animated backgrounds, calming sounds and your own messages. EyeRest Flow’s breaks are plainer and more directive: each one shows a single guided activity, distance focus, slow blinking, neck and shoulders, or calm breathing, with a slow countdown, so there is no deciding what to do with the 20 seconds. Both let you choose how firm the break is, from a dismissable nudge to a screen that holds until the timer ends, and both cap snoozes so the habit cannot quietly dissolve.

Both add blink and posture reminders between breaks. EyeRest Flow also schedules a longer movement break after several eye breaks, which answers the common criticism that 20-second pauses do nothing for your back; see how often to take a break for why both layers matter.

Beyond the timer

This is where the two apps diverge in philosophy. LookAway is growing into a digital wellness suite: a Screen Score, statistics on which apps and websites you use, a floating countdown that follows your cursor, Shortcuts and AppleScript hooks, and sync so a break on your Mac also appears on your iPhone or iPad. If you want data about your screen habits, it is clearly the richer app.

EyeRest Flow stays a break reminder on purpose. It keeps a count of breaks completed, skipped and snoozed and a streak, and nothing else; it has no analytics and sends nothing anywhere except your licence key to the payment provider. Its one indulgence is Leo, a pixel-art cat who lives on the menu bar panel, grooms, naps while you are paused, and stands up to watch you in the minute before a break. People either find this irrelevant or it becomes the reason they keep the app open. There is also a free Chrome extension with the same rhythm for the Windows or Linux machine you did not buy a Mac app for.

Price and licensing

Both are one-time purchases, which already puts them ahead of the subscription apps in this category. The structures differ:

  • LookAway charges per device. $19 covers one Mac, $29 covers two, $99 covers five. The $19 and $29 tiers include a year of updates; after that the app keeps working but you renew, at roughly half price, to get new versions. The $99 Believer tier includes lifetime updates.
  • EyeRest Flow charges $19 once for up to 3 Macs, with every future update included and nothing to renew.

For one Mac and one year, the price is the same. For a work Mac and a personal Mac, LookAway is $29 against $19. Over three years with updates on two Macs, LookAway comes to roughly $29 plus two renewals, against $19 once. If you want LookAway’s extra features, that gap is worth paying; if you do not, it is the whole argument for EyeRest Flow.

Which should you buy?

  • Buy LookAway if you want iPhone or iPad sync, app and website usage statistics, Focus Filters and calendar awareness, or automations, or if you prefer buying through the App Store or Setapp.
  • Buy EyeRest Flow if you have two or three Macs, want guided breaks and movement reminders, prefer an app that collects nothing, like the idea of a cat on the panel, or simply want to pay once and never think about it again.
  • Not sure? Both have free trials. Run LookAway for a week, then EyeRest Flow for a week, and keep the one you stopped noticing. That is the only review that matters for a break reminder.
